IGN on Security Council reform on 27 February 2018, intervention by Minna-Liina Lind, DPR of Estonia

On behalf of Estonia it is our pleasure to have you – two very distinguished Ambassadors – chairing these intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform at this session.

We thank you for the clear path you have shared with us for our work and we are hoping to make some progress based on this.

In Estonia´s view the achievements of the past three sessions are crucial and should form the basis towards a single text.

We are echoing the calls for a harmonized document as pointed out, among others, by the L.69 group this morning. Furthermore, the elements of convergence prepared by the Permanent Representative of Luxembourg at the 70th session should be in their entirety included in the commonalities document on the sections of relations between the Council and the General Assembly, and the size of the enlarged Council and working methods.

Estonia also believes that the African common position has to be better reflected in the updated text as well as the question regarding the representation of the Small Island Developing States.

We believe that updating the latest food for thought paper is useful, although much work lies still ahead. In that we would like to wish you all the best and can confirm Estonia´s full support.
