Eesti alalalise esindaja ÜRO juures, Margus Kolga sõnavõtt Nepali humanitaarkatastroofi teemalisel kohtumisel

Dear Under-Secretary General, Excellences, Distinguished Delegates,

Firstly, let me thank the Under-Secretary General for the timely briefing.

Estonia acknowledges the seriousness of the disaster in Nepal and is saddened by the loss of life in this crisis. There are thousands of people who have become homeless, and thousands who have been injured.  One week after the devastating earthquake the urgent humanitarian assistance  - medical treatment, water, food, shelters among others - is highly needed. I would like to comment the efforts already made by the Government of Nepal and international community in rescue and relief operations.

Estonia has responded to the WHO urgent appeal by contributing 50 000 euros for the ongoing humanitarian response in order to address immediate health needs and to coordinate the arrival and deployment of the foreign medical teams.

We have also made our USAR (urban search and rescue) team available already in the early stage of the crisis and have been ready to deploy the team immediately.

Also, the Estonian honorary consul in Nepal has started a people-to people initiative to provide assistance to victims of the earthquake and support the affected communities  in Baseri and Budhathum (Dhading region) and Barbak (Gurkha region) by offering them basic necessities like water, food, medicines, blankets and shelters.

Under-Secretary General,

Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and we will continue to follow closely the developments and linkages to the next phase.

Thank you.
