Statement by H. E. Mr. Margus Kolga, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Estonia to the Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees
Estonia highly values the work of UN Relief and
Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). We find it
extremely important that UNRWA constantly seeks solutions to operate more
efficiently. Therefore in the year 2013 the Estonian Government gave
80 000 euros to UNRWA, which included 50 000 euros as an un-earmarked
contribution for 2013 UNRWA programs and 30 000 euros for UNRWA`s humanitarian relief and support activities in
Nahr el-Bared refugee camp in Lebanon.
For the year 2014 I
have the pleasure to announce that Estonia has already transferred a
non-earmarked contribution of 70 000 euros for the UNRWA programs, which
will help to make the planning process more predictable and is in line with
Good Humanitarian Donorship principles.
UNRWA provides assistance, protection and
advocacy for some 5 million refugees in the Middle East, including
the Palestine refugees in Syria. The
humanitarian relief of the people of Palestine is
a priority. For a durable solution, however, direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine with genuine willingness from
both sides to establish two states living side by side in peace and security,
Estonia continues to assist Palestine people through
multilateral and bilateral development cooperation projects.
