Remarks by Mr. Urmas Paet, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia at High-Level Conference on the Central Emergency Response Fund, Pledging Session
Distinguished Under Secretary General, Emergency Relief Coordinator
· First of all, I would like to thank the Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos for her tremendous work and personal effort in supporting and coordinating effective humanitarian response in crises since taking over the post of Emergency Relief Coordinator last year. Humanitarian crises have become more large-scale and more complex, and huge dedication is needed to improve cooperation and coordination between different humanitarian actors.
· Estonia values highly the improved coordination capacity of OCHA in coordinating emergency humanitarian assistance, but we believe lot is still possible to achieve.
· Estonia acknowledges the importance of CERF to enable timely humanitarian assistance in accordance with humanitarian principles to those affected by natural disasters and complex emergencies.
· Estonia was one of the founding donors to the CERF to support fast delivery of humanitarian assistance. Estonia has increased its contribution to CERF year by year. With the aim to assure predictability of funds, we have transferred already our contribution for 2012 in amount of 75,000 euros (or 100,000 dollars).
