Statement by H.E. Sven Jürgenson, Ambassador of Estonia to the UN
Meeting of the Peacebuilding Commission on the Central African Republic
New York, 16 March, 2017
Thank you, Chair.
President of the Central African Republic, Distinguished Colleagues,
First of all, I would like to thank for all the presentations, we appreciate the updates on the situation in the country. Estonia contributed to the stabilization of the security situation in Central African Republic by deploying troops to the EU military mission in 2014. Additionally, we provided humanitarian assistance for alleviating the situation of internally displaced people and supported children’s access to education. We also continue to contributing to the Peacebuilding Fund. Thus, we have been carefully following the developments in the country.
We share the assessment that that security situation remains volatile in the country. At the same time, we fully support the President’s and the Government’s efforts and steps taken for sustaining peace and stability, including the National Recovery and Peacebuilding Plan and the strategy of DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration) process. In the current peacebuilding phase, strong support and close cooperation of the international community and regional partners is absolutely critical. MINUSCA’s role has especially been, and continues to be indispensable in stabilization, mediation and protection of civilians. We believe that MINUSCA should act to the fullest extent of its mandate.
The EU will remain a close partner for the Central African Republic in connection with the implementation of the Recovery and Peacebuilding Plan. We are pleased that the EU Training Mission´s (EUTM RCA) support to the Armed Forces of the Central African Republic and partnering with MINUSCA have been very successful.
Mr Chair, I would like to thank you for inviting the countries of the Economic Community of Central African States, that are not members of the configuration, to the meeting, as the contribution by these countries is very valuable. We hope this practice will also continue in the future.
We believe that the role of the Peacebuilding Commission is crucial in bringing relevant actors together and reinforcing efforts for sustaining peace in the Central African Republic. As Estonia is a new member of the PBC, we are ready to lend our support.
