Statement by H.E. Mr. Sven Jürgenson, Permanent Representative of Estonia to the UN, at the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to UNRWA, 5 December 2016

Mr. Chairman,
Estonia values highly the work of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) with the protracted emergency in the occupied Palestinian territory and acknowledges the importance of the provided assistance, protection and advocacy to Palestinian refugees. We find it extremely important that UNRWA constantly seeks solutions to operate more efficiently. Therefore, in the year 2016 the Estonian Government gave 80 000 euros to UNRWA as a non-earmarked contribution and continues to fulfil the pledge made at the Gaza donor conference, allocating also 250 000 euros in 2016.
For the year 2017, I have the pleasure to announce that Estonia has already transferred a non-earmarked contribution of 80 000 euros for the UNRWA programs, which will help to make the planning process more predictable and is in line with Good Humanitarian Donorship principles.
Estonia acknowledges the utmost important role of UNRWA is playing in the region as an emergency service provider, including shelter, repair and collective centre management and emergency food assistance.

Estonia continues to support UNRWA’s activities to alleviate the humanitarian situation of the residents of the Gaza Strip and Palestine refugees and assist Palestine people through multilateral and bilateral development cooperation projects.

I thank you!
