Remarks by Mr. Sven Jürgenson, Permanent Representative of Estonia to the United Nations Under GA Agenda item 130: “Global awareness of the tragedies of irregular migrants in the Mediterranean basis with specific emphasis on Syrian asylum seekers

20 November 2015
Mister President, Excellencies, Distinguished delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Estonia aligns itself with the statement delivered by the European Union.

During the last year we have seen an unprecedented number of migrants and refugees around the world. Devastating conflicts in Syria and part of Iraq, poverty and unrest in Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa and West Africa, and in Libya have pushed masses of people to flee their homes - unfortunately, for most of them, with no prospect of return to their homes in the near future.

This is a global crisis. According to UNHCR, by the end of 2014, a record of almost 60 million forcibly displaced persons around the world has been reached. Many of them are hosted by neighbouring countries, which often experience difficult situations themselves. Unprecedented number of refugees and migrants are also seeking protection in Europe – in 2015 more than 1 million refugees and migrants have crossed the European borders. As this is a global challenge, we need to address it together and in all it dimensions. We have to find common and sustainable solutions.

Estonia supports the EU efforts to respond to the crises. The primary aim of our common action is to save lives and ensure protection to those in need. Secondly we are also committed to address the root causes of the migratory flows. Third, we are fighting organized crime responsible for smuggling and illicit trafficking.

Estonia will continue to support countries in crisis and to fight the root causes of migration, primarily through humanitarian aid and multilateral development cooperation. Estonia also fights organized crime by participating at the EU operation mandated by Security Council Resolution 2240.

Thank you!
