Statement by Ms. Minna-Liina Lind, Deputy Permanent Representative at the 2015 UN Pledging Conference for Development Activities

Mr. Chair,

First of all congratulations on your election to preside of this conference.

Estonia is committed to supporting the United Nations multilateral development system, and we are pleased to participate in this Pledging Conference for Development Activities.

We welcome the first coherent analysis of the funding of the United Nations operational activities for development as requested by the Economic and Social Council in its resolution 2013/5. The UN work should be guided by the ambition to constantly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the development system.

The importance of the United Nations development system cannot be stressed enough, which was strongly underlined by the successful adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Now more than ever, adequate funding is vital to achieving the goals we just agreed upon. Therefore Estonia supports the efforts to secure consistent core funding, which is essential to guarantee that the UN entities can deliver their mandates.

I would like to announce that pending government approval, Estonia will pledge core funding to the following UN entities in 2016:

-     For UNICEF we will contribute 150.000 Euro, approximately 162.000 US $, and for UNGEI 30.000 Euro, approximately 32.000 US $

-      For UNDP 75.000 Euro, approximately 81.000 US $

-      For UNFPA 60.000 Euro, approximately 65.000 US $

-      For UN-WOMEN 100.000 Euro, approximately 108.000 US $

-      For UNHCR 80.000 Euro, approximately 86.000 US $

Additionally, Estonia will continue to provide non-core funding for a range of UN agencies and will also support UN projects and programs to respond to the many crises around the world. We will inform our UN development partners directly of the funding decisions.

 Mr. Chair,

The multilateral system has an important role to address global challenges for achieving a more just, sustainable and equal future. Therefore the UN development and humanitarian system continues to be an important partner for Estonia.

 Thank you.
