Statement by Ms. Anneli Vares at the briefing on the findings of the ICPD Beyond 2014 Review

14.03.2014

We would like to thank the UNFPA for presenting this landmark report, for their extensive work and for having consulted closely with Member States through the global survey process and the regional reviews to produce this report.

We fully share the ideas that investments in gender equality and rights, in health and education and securing the human rights of all are essential for sustainable development.

Completing the unfinished agenda of the ICPD will require a focused and shared commitment to human rights, to non-discrimination, and to expanding opportunities for all persons.

The figures and extensive data presented in the report are useful for planning our further work and in many points also timely reminders about the tremendous inequalities in different sectors persisting in the world. As we know, the discrimination of women is universal. Concerning violence against women, it is especially alarming that 70 per cent of women surveyed in some countries continue to agree that wife-beating is justified under certain circumstances.)

As other countries before, Estonia would like to stress that of all human rights, including sexual and reproductive health and rights need to be protected and promoted and are necessary preconditions for sustainable development. Thereby we would especially like to emphasize the importance of comprehensive sexuality education.

We agree that the development challenges we face require systematic participation of all stakeholders in crafting responses to these challenges which require partnership and global leadership through UN.

We look forward to the discussions in the 47th session of the Commission on Population and Development and the General Assembly Special Session in September and the follow-up to the ICPD Beyond 2014, taking into account the findings of the review.
