Eesti Esinduse ÜRO juures diplomaadi Kristel Lõuk`i sõnavõtt UNICEFi Nõukogu istungil
Estonia has been supporting UNICEF´s activities since 1998, when the Estonian development cooperation was first planned and initial projects implemented. Since then we have supported UNICEF via annual non-earmarked contributions, as well as supporting many development and humanitarian aid programmes and projects in various countries. UNICEF has been key partner for Estonia to channel its contributions to different crises and disasters.
Estonia welcomes many efforts made by UNICEF towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals and UNICEF contributions to implement the Rio+ 20 outcome. We hope UNICEF continues to be active in the debate on post 2015 agenda to get the important issues such as focus on children’s rights and protection, education, gender, and resilience on the new agenda. We see UNICEF as an innovative development organization and hope to see even more new ideas and approaches.
Last year Estonia supported UNICEF activities with almost 750 000 euros - the biggest annual contribution we have made to UNICEF so far. I am pleased to announce that this year Estonian government has decided to increase its core contribution to UNICEF and also for Girls’ Education Initiative by 50%. With the aim to assure predictability of funds Estonia has already transferred its 2014 core contribution of 90 000 euros to UNICEF and 30 000 euros to UNGEI. Additionally Estonian government decided yesterday to donate 100 000 euros to UNICEF to support continuation of education of Syrian children in Lebanon.
Our increased contributions shows our confidence in UNICEF’s work in protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. Estonia is committed to support UNICEF’s activities also in the future with possible increased contributions. Thank you!
